Q: Do I Need a Humidifier?

A: Every house is different. The geothermal system does not change the need for one.

It’s really about your comfort and your choice.

Q: Is Geothermal Quiet?

A: YES!

Not only is it a very quiet system, with no outdoor unit there is no longer the noise outside nor the wear and tear from the weather.

Q: What kind of filter do they use?

A: Geothermal systems use a filter like any other system. They come in various sizes and styles.

Q: What is the temperaure of the air coming out of the registers?

A: Very similar to a conventional system. The normal range is 90 to 110 degrees.

Q: How much land do I need for a geothermal loop?

A: You can put a geothermal system in any size home or size lot.

The decision is mainly about cost:

  • A horizontal loop is the most cost effective loop to install but does take more yard space.
  • A vertical loop can be put in the smallest of yards, but can add $4000 – $5000 to the cost for the drilling.

The best way to make this decision is to have someone come to your home and walk you through your choices.

Q: Why is Sustainable Energy Important?

A: Sustainable energy is crucial for mitigating climate change, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and ensuring a reliable energy supply for future generations. It helps decrease our dependence on fossil fuels, which are finite and contribute to environmental pollution and global warming.

Q: How Does Geothermal Energy Work?

A:Not all geothermal energy comes from power plants. Geothermal heat pumps can do all sorts of things—from heating and cooling homes to warming swimming pools. These systems transfer heat by pumping water or a refrigerant (a special type of fluid) through pipes just below the Earth’s surface, where the temperature is a constant 50 to 60°F.

Q: What is the Lifespan of Geothermal Heat Pumps?

A: Geothermal heat pump systems have an average 24+ year life expectancy for the heat pump itself. Additionally, they move between three and five times the energy they consume between a building’s interior space and the ground.

Q: How Can I Switch to Sustainable Energy at Home?

A: To switch to sustainable energy at home, you can install solar panels, a small wind turbine, or a geothermal heat pump. You can also explore energy-efficient appliances, LED lighting, and smart home technologies to reduce your energy consumption.

Q: How efficient is a geothermal heat pump

A:They are more than three times as efficient as the most efficient fossil fuel furnace. Instead of burning combustible fuel to make heat, they simply move heat that already exists.

By doing that, they provide three units of energy for every one unit used to power the geothermal system.

Q. What Does Something Like This Cost?

A: The typical payback for replacing a conventional system with geothermal is around 4–5 years. If you are installing Geothermal in a new construction home the payback starts on day one.

The amount added to the new construction loan is less than the energy savings on day one of use. To figure the payback accurately, you must know how much per year you will save in energy costs with a geothermal system and the difference in costs between it and a conventional system.

As an example: If you save $700 per year with a geothermal system and the cost difference is $2000, your paybackwill be less than 3 years. Also, a conventional system made today has an expected life span of 12–15 years while a geothermal system’s life span is 22–25 years. Many factors go into the cost and payback. Your geothermal specialist can run reports comparing systems to help you make an educated decision.

Q. What About Comfort?

A: A geothermal heat pump system moves warm air (90 degrees – 105 degrees) throughout your home via a standard duct network. Typically, a very even comfort level is found throughout the home. This is because
the warm air is moved in slightly higher volumes and, therefore, saturates the home with warmth more evenly.

This helps even out hot or cold spots and eliminates the cold air blast common with fossil fuel furnaces.

Q. Can I Get a Tax Credit for Installing This System?

A: It depends on where you live. You will need to check with your electric utilities, rural co-op, county and states for rebates or credits.

Also, a federal tax credit may be available and can sometimes be upwards of 30% of your system cost.

Q. Can a Geothermal Heat Pump Also Heat Water for my Home?

A: Yes. Using what is called a desuperheater, some types of geothermal heatpumps can save you up to 50% on your waterheating bill by preheating tank water.

Desuperheaters are standard on some units,optional on others. Certain geothermal models provide all your hot water needs on demand at the same high efficiency as the heating/cooling cycles.

Q. Will the Loop Joints be Heat Fused?

A: The ONLY acceptable method for joining sections of the special pipe used for closedloop systems is heat fusion. Any other method will eventually result in failure of the loop.

Q. Do Geothermal Heat Pumps Have Outdoor Units?

A: No. The equipment goes inside your home, usually in the basement, garage, or crawl space – the same space you would place a typical furnace.

Because it is indoors, the lifespan of the compressor and major components are greatly extended by not having the effect of the outdoor elements.

Q. What are the Various Kinds of Earth Loops?

Horizontal Closed Loop—Where space allows, the fused piping loop is buried approximately five feet deep. This loop is the most affordable option.

Vertical Closed Loop—Where space is limited, the fused piping loop is inserted in boreholes from 150 to 400ft deep. This loop can add $3000–$4000 to the cost per ton.

Pond Loop—When a body of water is available, the fused piping loop can be submerged beneath the surface. There are water depth requirements for this kind of loop.

Open Loop—Where groundwater is adequate, well water can be used directly without a fused loop. This is the least recommended loop in New York.

Q. Which Loop System is Best for Me?

That is an interesting question – and we hear it a lot.

Well, part of the answer depends on your water – and we all know how varied New York water can be, so the preferred method is a closed loop system.

However, an open loop can be right for you if you have an adequate groundwater supply and means of disposal.

Over a period of years, a closed-loop system will require less maintenance because it is sealed and pressurized, eliminating the possible build-up of minerals or iron.

The best answer is going to be determined by talking with a trained Geothermal designer and contractor.
